After being caught on a home video surveillance camera stealing a cat, a man from Mesa, Arizona, has been arrested for animal cruelty when the pet was later found mutilated, according to a report by local TV station KPNX.

The footage from the surveillance camera showed the man stop his car in front of a residence, steal the home’s cat from the roof of a parked car and drive off with it. Local authorities said the man is allegedly responsible for torturing dozens of cats throughout the city, KPNX reported.

After multiple cats had gone missing, the neighborhood began to take notice. One evening, resident Ben Smith saw the suspect driving his car and decided to follow him, taking pictures of the license plate and the individual’s face. The photos were then turned over to police who confronted the suspect at his home and found incriminating evidence outside the house, including a strong odor of deceased animals, the news source said.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, approximately 17 percent of all animal cruelty incidents involve cats. By implementing advanced video surveillance cameras, homeowners and animal lovers may be able to protect their pets more effectively.
