In today's post 9/11 landscape, perimeter security is vitally important to the Department of Homeland Security, making securing the nation's seaports one of the agency's top initiatives. According to a report by SecurityInfoWatch, these demands pushed the Greater Lafourche Port Commission in Louisiana to implement a best-of-breed video surveillance system at Port Fourchon.

"It's actually a full-blown maritime awareness system," security expert Ray Cavanagh said, according to the news source. "This was funded in part by the Port Security Grant Program and it incorporates a wireless mesh network, the video components which are fed through a video management system and then feeds into kind of an overarching video security system."

The video surveillance system has a unique software capability that lets it analyze and establish a baseline for "normal" activity. As a result, any deviations from the norm or anomalies can immediately be detected and trigger an alert, SecurityInfoWatch noted.

Research firm MarketsandMarkets noted that the global surveillance market is forecast to generate more than $25 billion in revenue by 2016. A major driver behind this growth is the advancement of technologies, enabling them to virtually think for themselves.
