NYC’s subway security goes off the rails

Means of public transportation, such as New York City’s subway system, transport massive amounts of people every day. The 9/11 events sparked the realization in America that terrorist groups can view public transportation as an ideal target for attack.  With relatively little effort, an attack on a mode of public transportation can cause a public disruption, major havoc, loss of life and more.

NY authorities understood this long ago, and made intricate plans of upgrading New York’s subway system’s security to include a network of high-tech video cameras.

But the completion of the MTA’s electronic security upgrade has recently been pushed back by two years.  New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli reports that this puts the program nearly six years behind initial schedule.  The installation of the security cameras was one of several phases in the MTA’s capital security program, and the last one yet to complete.

With the most recent planned delay, the upgrade is expected to be completed in 2014 and cost a whopping $516 million of tax payers’ money, nearly double the original estimate.
