When biometrics are used, stored personal images are saved and used to identify a person, and these images are used to either access or deny entry to a door or other secured area.

There are a few different biometric images that can be used to identify a person. Fingerprints are probably the most common. A fingerprint scanner reads the ridges and valleys on a person’s finger (usually the thumb) and attempts to matches the reading to a stored database of access permissions. Hand geometry readers scan the shape of a person’s hand across a number of dimensions. Retinal eye scanners use the same principle, but match the unique pattern of a person’s retina blood vessels. Speaker recognition is a sophisticated biometric that matches voice patterns and characteristics using complex linguistics, mathematics, and computing.
